FIN-EST Green Corridor

Creating a climate-neutral customer journey – a green maritime corridor connecting Helsinki-Tallinn and Vuosaari-Muuga.

The FIN-EST Green Corridor initiative was launched following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2023 by representatives from the cities, ports, and shipping lines of Helsinki and Tallinn.

The core partners include the Port of Tallinn, Port of Helsinki, City of Tallinn, City of Helsinki, Rederi AB Eckerö, Tallink Grupp, Viking Line, and the Estonian Ministry of Climate. The initiative also receives strong support from the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications. Together, these stakeholders are committed to advancing a series of projects aimed at enhancing sustainability, strengthening competitiveness, and increasing both passenger and cargo flows between the two countries.

The FIN-EST Green Corridor is more than just a shipping route—it serves as an umbrella for multiple initiatives, both at sea and on land, including port operations and sustainable tourism efforts in Helsinki and Tallinn. These projects focus on reducing emissions and promoting the adoption of solutions with a smaller environmental footprint.

CO2 emissions

Background and objectives of CO₂ calculations

For the Tallinn–Helsinki and Muuga–Vuosaari transport corridor, CO₂ emissions were calculated to identify the main emission sources and track how these have developed over time.

The analysis included all major activities:

  • Vessels
  • Onshore power supply (OPS) – included in the calculations when vessels do not use green electricity when connected to OPS
  • Port and stevedoring services (HHLA, Esteve, TLG Stividor in the Port of Tallinn)
  • Machinery and vehicles

This breakdown provides a comprehensive view of the corridor’s carbon footprint and highlights the areas with the most significant impact, where emission reduction measures would be most effective.
