Ellen Kaasik was elected Chairman of ESPO’s Sustainable Development Committee

At the 17th general assembly of the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO)Ellen Kaasik, the Head of Quality and Environmental Management Department of Port of Tallinn, was elected Chairman of ESPO’s Sustainable Development Committee. The position was appointed for the period 2014-2016.

ESPO’s Sustainable Development Committee includes representatives from big EU’s and Norwegian ports and its role is to be an adviser for the ESPO’s general assembly and management on environmental issues regarding port activities.

The goal of the committee’s work is to put together practical evaluations and expert opinions regarding particular fields of EU’s legislation and politics. Under Ellen Kaasik’s leadership the committee is also responsible for analysing European Commission’s proposals that are connected to the field that includes preparing the evaluations, recommendations and expert opinions of the management of ESPO and mapping the implications and needs for further research.

In addition to its advisory function, the ESPO Sustainable Development Commission has an important role to play in sharing the best practices in the fields of environmental management, eco-development of ports, waste management, natural environment, air pollution, marine environment, energy and climate change.

Alongside her new position Ellen Kaasik will continue environmental cooperation as the Member of BPO’s Environmental Committee and as the Member of the Management Board of the Estonian Association for Environmental Management.
