The Supervisory Board of Port of Tallinn approved the construction of LNG terminal

At the meeting held on 30th of June, the Supervisory Board of Port of Tallinn approved the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering terminal to Muuga Harbour.

Based on Supervisory Board’s decision a contract for constructing a small-scale LNG receiving and distributing terminal to Muuga Harbour’s Eastern part is expected to be signed with Vopak E.O.S. Ltd. The LNG bunkering terminal will create opportunities for receiving LNG arriving by the sea, storing it and for loading tankers and tank trucks.

The exact schedule for the construction depends on the cooperation with the local government, Jõelähtme municipality, which is hearing the project matter. According to current plans, the construction of the terminal is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of 2017”, said Remo Holsmer, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Port of Tallinn.

Holsmer confirmed that Muuga Harbour, which is year around navigable, is the best suitable location for the LNG terminal in Estonia. “The construction of the LNG terminal improves significantly Estonia’s position in the Baltic Sea region as only few harbours in the region offer possibilities for bunkering LNG.  Due to the stricter environmental conditions more and more shipping companies start using LNG as ship fuel,” explained Holsmer.

In the first phase it is planned to construct the LNG terminal with the maximum capacity of 4,000 cubic meters. Terminal’s whole territory covers an area of about 8,500 square meters.
