Port of Tallinn’s passenger number has been increasing 11 years in a row achieving the whole-time record of 10.6 million passengers

In 2018, 10.6 million passengers passed through the harbours of Port of Tallinn, that is 60 thousand passengers or 0.6% more than in 2017. The number of cruise passengers hit a record, the number of passengers travelling on the Tallinn-Helsinki route retained the same result as a year before. Port of Tallinn’s passenger number has been increasing 11 years in a row.

According to Port of Tallinn’s CCO Margus Vihman the number of passengers of Port of Tallinn increased mostly on the account of cruise passengers. „During the cruise season of 2018, cruise ships called Tallinn 339 times and brought 635,068 cruise passengers to our capital, this is 28 cruise ship calls and over 70 thousand passengers more than in 2017. 8.79 million people travelled on the Tallinn-Helsinki route, that is practically the same result as a year before. Tallinn-Stockholm line serviced 1.009 million passengers and Tallinn-St Petersburg line 85 thousand passengers,“ described Vihman.

„In the end of 2018 we released a new web application that gives statistical information about passengers passing through the harbours of Port of Tallinn based on their citizenship, gender and age. Based on that we can see that of all the passengers passing through the harbours of Port of Tallinn people with Finnish citizenship made up the majority with 43%. 26% of all the passengers were Estonians, 4% Germans, 3% Americans and 2.8% Swedish. Of all the passengers the majority were men aged 35-39,“ added Vihman.

With 2.067 million passengers the most popular vessel in 2018 was Tallink’s Megastar operating on the Tallinn-Helsinki route, it was followed by Eckerö Line’s vessel Finlandia with 1.860 million passengers serviced in 2018. The third most popular vessel was Tallink’s Star, which also operates on the Tallinn-Helsinki route and carried altogether 1.754 million passengers last year.

Tallink’s share of the annual passenger number was 57%, followed by Viking Line with 18%, Eckerö Line with 18% and Moby SPL with 1%.
