Since launching operations at Muuga Harbour in 2019, PK Terminal has grown into one of the most technologically advanced terminal operators in the Baltics. A terminal built on innovation
“When we started in 2019, it was clear that we could not work in the same way as others, relying heavily on manual processes,” says Kaur Karon, Managing Director of PK Terminal. “We decided to build our own digital system to make operations faster, more accurate and more transparent for our customers.”
Today, that system is the backbone of the terminal. Integrated with customer platforms, customs and port infrastructure, it enables real-time cargo tracking, automated documentation and seamless vehicle flow through the terminal.
Operators receive instructions digitally and complete all required actions from their cab, eliminating paperwork almost entirely. The result is a highly efficient operation, with an average truck turnaround time of just 17 minutes from gate to gate.
The solution has also proven its value beyond day-to-day operations. Global fertilizer company Yara adopted PK Terminal’s system to manage its logistics flows. The collaboration highlights how a solution originally designed for operational efficiency can scale to meet international standards and customer expectations.
Beyond execution, the system provides detailed operational data that supports planning, forecasting, and pricing. What once required several people working around the clock with paperwork is now handling digitally improving accuracy, reducing costs and enabling the team to focus on value-added activities.
Advanced equipment setting new standards
PK Terminal complements its digital capabilities with modern handling equipment designed for performance and flexibility. The terminal uses a range of Sennebogen material handlers, tailored to different cargo types and vessel sizes.
At the centre of this fleet is a machine unique in the Baltic region, fully electric Sennebogen 885 material handler. With a working radius of up to 32 metres and lifting capacity of up to 35 tonnes, it is the largest of its kind in the Baltics. Compared to diesel-powered alternatives, it delivers around 25% higher efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Together with deep-water quays capable of handling Panamax-class vessels, the equipment enables smooth and reliable handling of large cargo volumes.
“It is a pleasure to see how the right technology and infrastructure work together,” Karon notes. “With the right equipment, large vessels can be handled efficiently and safely.”
Efficiency that creates value for customers
Efficiency at PK Terminal is not an end in itself but a way to create measurable value for customers. The terminal’s processes are designed to minimize waiting times, optimize cargo flows, and reduce unnecessary movements.
For example, trucks typically avoid empty runs bringing inbound cargo to the terminal and leaving with outbound loads. Combined with the fast turnaround time, this significantly reduces overall transport costs and environmental impact.
In fertilizer logistics, PK Terminal also operates a semi-automated packing line and dedicated bulk warehouse, enabling precise and reliable handling, including big bag filling. The quality of service is reflected in consistently high customer satisfaction and the absence of packaging-related claims.
The company focuses on long-term partnerships, adapting its infrastructure and services to customer needs. Recent investments, such as a new 6,000 m² warehouse, demonstrate this approach creating capacity that aligns with customer demand while maintaining operational efficiency.
Muuga Harbour as a logistics hub
PK Terminal’s operations are strengthened by its location in Muuga Harbour, Estonia’s largest cargo port and a key logistics hub in the region.
With deep-water access, rail connectivity, and extensive storage capacity, the terminal can handle a wide range of cargo efficiently. Muuga’s infrastructure enables cost-effective transport solutions and supports high cargo volumes.
The port has also become a central hub for agricultural exports, with a significant share of Estonia’s grain moving through PK Terminal. Strong connections and a flexible port ecosystem allow operators to collaborate and ensure smooth cargo flows across the harbour.
